Baby Food at 11 Months: How Much Is Too Much?

Baby Food at 11 Months: How Much Is Too Much?

If you’re a parent to an 11-month-old and above, you’ve probably wondered:
“Am I feeding my baby too much, or not enough?”

This is one of the most common concerns parents have, especially as their little one approaches the 1-year milestone. At this stage, babies are eating more solids but still need breast milk or formula and striking the right balance can feel tricky.

In this post, we’ll cover:
  • How much food an 11-month-old really needs
  • Sample portion sizes and feeding schedule
  • Signs your baby might be eating too much (or too little)
  • Practical tips for stress-free mealtimes

And if you want a full guide with recipes, sample meal plans, and nutrition advice, I’ve created a step-by-step eBook to make feeding your baby simple and worry-free.

How Much Should an 11-Month-Old Eat?

According to pediatric guidelines, most 11-month-olds need:

  • 16–24 ounces of breast milk or formula daily
  • Three small meals + 1–2 snacks per day
  • About ¼ to ½ cup of food per meal (fruits, veggies, grains, protein, or dairy)
But here’s the key: every baby is different. Some days your baby will eat like a champion, other days they’ll barely touch food. That’s normal! Babies are excellent at self-regulating.

Signs You’re Feeding Too Much (or Too Little)

Your baby may be full if:
  • They push food away or turn their head
  • They spit out food after a few bites
  • They lose interest in eating and want to play
Your baby may need more if:
  • They’re reaching for more food eagerly
  • They finish everything and still seem hungry
  • They’re waking at night more often than usual
The best rule: offer healthy foods and let your baby decide how much to eat.

Sample Meal Plan for 11-Month-Old and above

Here’s an example of a balanced day:
  • Breakfast: Oatmeal with mashed banana + 4 oz milk
  • Snack: Small cubes of soft pear
  • Lunch: Mashed sweet potato + chopped chicken + peas
  • Snack: Yogurt with fruit puree
  • Dinner: Rice + lentils + cooked carrots
  • Before Bed: Breast milk or formula

Why Parents Feel Confused About Feeding

Many parents feel stressed at this stage because:
  • Family/friends give conflicting advice
  • Babies’ appetites change daily
  • It’s hard to know what “enough” looks like
  • Certain foods feel unsafe or unclear for babies

If this sounds like you, don’t worry. That’s exactly why I created something to help.
